Second SCINI mission.

by Francois Cazenave ~ October 23rd, 2008. Filed under: Uncategorized.

This morning we assembled SCINI and took it down to the jetty hut for another technical dive. Unfortunately we had an electrical problem after spending a few minutes in the water. We took SCINI out of the water and noticed that there was smoke inside the camera housing. We quickly took it apart and realized that one of the electrical component had literally blown up. We replaced the component, without really understanding was had happened. In the afternoon we launch SCINI for another dive, but sure enough, the same thing happened. Later on, we realized that the problem came from the light ring. We need to go back to the lab and do some more testing in the tank before we can go in the ocean.

Bob is ready to launch SCINI in the dive hole.

We have been getting some really beautiful light at night

Around midnight, the sun sets behinds Mount Discovery.

We use the Pisten Bully to take all the gear down to the dive hut, where we launch SCINI.

View of the station from the dive hut.

Even with the hut on top of it, the ice hole freezes overnight and we have to break the ice in the morning.

This Weddell seal has been hanging out near the dive hut for the last few days.
